Politically Correct is a term I feel like I’ve heard way too much. What does it even mean? Are we looking to politics to tell us what is the proper way of handling comments? That’s stupid. Who decides what is PC and what isn’t? The majority? The left wing? The right wing? The Paul McCartney & Wings?
Surely some things are actually offensive and are meant to be, but is anyone else feeling like some people are way too sensitive these days? People get upset over the most insignificant issues and comments. When I was in school, if someone offended you, and you reacted by blubbering on the bleachers over it, you’d get called worse. You had to learn to get over it. Now as adults, it’s like people can complain whenever they want.
I know I sound like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli (anyone get that Seinfeld reference?), but how did we become people who are so easily angered?
Every other day someone is crying about something someone did or said, and it’s usually said by people they don’t even know—some celebrity or politician just trying to make headlines. Think back about the great social media debates of the past few years. You know what I’m talking about.
As I said, some comments actually are offensive and are intended to be by some stupid person. I get it. Let’s speak up for those who can’t. I’m for that. But all of the talk show discussions and social media rants are getting old. If I am walking out of a store and I say, “Merry Christmas” to you and that offends you, then… what is wrong with you? I’m not busting up into a temple yelling “SANTA LIVES!” And I’m not Jewish, but if someone said, “Happy Hanukah” to me I wouldn’t go cry to Fox News and say that they beat me over the head with a menorah.
Do you understand the kind of “offense” I’m talking about? I’m not supporting hate crimes or racism. I’m against the petty content that makes up 90% of news networks’ airtime and fills up my feed on Facebook.
Anything can be offensive to people who think too highly of themselves. These types of people are so full of pride that they feel like everyone should share their views about everything. Well, the fact is that we are in a diverse country. Get over it.
I have this special trick I’ve developed for whenever I get offended by something on TV: I change the channel. It’s amazing how well it works!
Conservatives, please stop being offended by Michelle Obama’s health initiatives and freakishly toned arms. It’s just fruits and vegetables. Last time I checked, God made them.
Liberals, please quit acting like you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for posting a couple of statuses on Facebook. You’re not eating chicken sandwiches? We’re all impressed.
Jonathan Tony, get off your soapbox, loser. No one reads your blog anyway.
